There are to ways in doing so. The first one is the simplest but it does not ensure that your new operating system would work 100% and bug free (as possible). The second one is kinda tricky but it really useful if you master it.

1) Simple Upgrade

When installing an official os, just install the Desktop Manager from the cd provided or visit here (https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22) plug in your device and let it do the work for you. If any update is found it will prompt you to download.

When the os you want to install is a leaked one, download the os from the site you found it, install it to your pc and go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader, delete the vendor.xml and open the loader.exe

2) Clean Upgrade

First you wanna have installed BBSAK (http://blackberry-experts.net/news/bbsak-17-update) and BlackBerry Desktop Manager (https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22).

Now backup your data by opening the desktop manager and going to Backup and Restore section and hit Backup.

After that we want to backup our third-party apps. Just open BBSAK and choose Backup Apps. Your apps are backed up in C:\Program Files\BBSAK\Backup

After youve finished the preparation of your device click WIPE DEVICE on BBSAK. This will remove the os and applications giving a 507 error.

For the final step, now you are ready to upgrade your os using the instructions given above for the leaked os install.

When you reach the screen where you select the applications that are going to be put on your device go to ADD and select the .alx file in C:\Program Files\BBSAK\Backup. This will load all your third party aps.

Let it finish and wait for your phone to reboot. This may take a while depending on the applications you installed.

When your device reboots just connect it to the Desktop Manager and go to the Backup and Restore section and hit Restore. Navigate to the location of your saved .ipd file created in the first step of this guide.

You are set and upgraded, just perform a battery pull and your phone is going to shine! :)

Tip: After the upgrade, to achieve the best performance of your battery, let it discharge completely and charge it fully with the device closed.

Repeat the procedure a couple of times and you'll see great improvement.

By doing so you prevent the lazy battery effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_effect).
